The inhabitants of the Pacific island of Bougainville have found a new type of biodiesel: coconut oil. In an article published today, the BBC shows that "coco-fuel" could replace classical fuel because the dependency on the latter became too important and, because of the rocketing prices, put local businesses at stake. |
Backyard refineries have sprouted on the island, situated in the east of Papua New Guinea. The oil, usually used for a cooking purpose, is now filling car tanks and "it smells nice," says one of the users on Bougainville. Iran and Europe have already shown an interest in th new fuel. Maybe one day our streets will smell no more of exhaust pipes but of coconut cocktails, who knows?
